Diptongos
Remember: in Spanish vowels are divided into two types: open (a/e/o) and closed (i/u).
A diphthong is a syllable formed by one open (a/e/o) and one closed vowel (i/u).

| ei / ey (final de palabra): veinte / rey | |
| oi / oy (final de palabra): oigo, hoy | |

| ou: dos o‿uno |

Remember that syllables with g + ue/ui have an umlaut (two dots) above the u (ü). |

In speech, the diphthong ie is often pronounced [y]: |

| iu: ciudad | ui: ruido, muy |

There are also combinations of three vowels pronounced as a single syllable (triphthongs):
i/u + a/e/o + i/u

Remember that triphthongs can also occur among vowels of two words in succession.
