LA ENTONACIÓN (II). ENTONACIÓN INTERROGATIVA / INTONATION (ll). INTERROGATIVE INTONATION.
Open-ended questions are those that are answered with other than a sí/no, and employ interrogative pronouns, qué, quién, cuándo…
When asking for information, questions have a descending intonation:
- The tone rises until the stressed syllable of the interrogative pronoun (higher tone).
- Then descends until the end of the sentence.
The rise and fall of the tone is broader than in regular sentences.
Listen, paying attention to the intonation:
¿Cómo estás?
Sometimes the intonation rises when you want to express other shades of meaning: for example, in a polite request.
Listen, paying attention to the intonation:
¿Quién puede cerrar la puerta?
Listen to and repeat the following questions with the proper intonation. |
