LAS PAUSAS Y LOS SIGNOS DE PUNTUACIÓN / PAUSES AND PUNCTUATION MARKS

In written Spanish, pauses are indicated by commas (,).
The principal function of pauses is to separate the parts of a sentence.


Me llamo José, pero me llaman Pepe.

For example, there is always a pause between naming someone you are addressing (vocative) and the actual phrase.


Daniel, ¿qué tal estás?

The colon (:) indicates a pause before listing things or offering examples.


Sabe idiomas: inglés, francés, italiano…

Elements in a list are also separated by pauses (in writing indicated by commas [,]). The intonation almost always rises at the end of each element, except the last.


Sabe francés, inglés, italiano y alemán.

Pauses can also indicate different meanings. Listen and compare:


–Pablo es un mentiroso. –No le conozco muy bien.

–Pablo es un mentiroso. –No, le conozco muy bien.

–¿Nos podemos ir? –No, hay clase.

–¿Nos podemos ir? –No hay clase.

Otras pausas se usan para pensar o dudar.

1) Pauses indicating doubt: sounds or fill-in words are used.

eh…, mm…, este…, esto…

2) Discursive markers: These are frequent is spoken language to change the subject or add a new one, or to lend naturalness to a conversation.

bueno, pues, a ver…

Read and listen to this interview for a job with an NGO (non-governmental organization) and note these kinds of pauses:

—Buenos días. ¿Puedes presentar tu currículum?
—Sí, sí. Bueno, soy licenciado en empresariales…
—[asiente]
—Tengo también mm… un Máster en Organización al Desarrollo…
—¿Por qué un máster así?
—Pues, porque me interesa mucho la ayuda humanitaria…
—Muy bien.
—Y tengo, eh… dos o tres años de experiencia en otras ONG.
—¿Te interesa la cooperación internacional?
—Sí, pero… mm… ahora prefiero trabajar en España.
—¡Ajá! ¿Y eso?
—Sí, bueno, también hay gente aquí con problemas…
